JOINT MEDIA RELEASE: Morpheus National Task Force target consorting during Hells Angels OMCG national run
Police from NSW and Victoria conducted a high-visibility cross-border operation targeting members of the Hells Angels outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) at the weekend.
As part of the Morpheus National Task Force targeting OMCG, police established the operation to monitor the activities of a ‘National Run’ by the Hells Angels OMCG from Thursday 9 February to Sunday 12 February 2017.
Officers from NSW Police Force’s Strike Force Raptor and Victoria Police’s Task Force Echo were assisted by officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Dog Unit, Mildura Police Command (VIC) and Barrier Local Area Command (NSW).
Police staged vehicle stop locations during the run to enforce consorting legislation and ensure participants complied with road rules and rode in a safe manner.
Five people – including a member of the Hells Angel OMCG – were arrested in Mildura following a number of incidents in Mildura on Saturday (11 February 2017), which included a number of scuffles throughout the CBD. Three men and one woman were treated for minor injuries.
The OMCG member has been released pending further inquiries, while the other three men and a woman received penalty notices.
Two other members of the OMCG were charged and bailed in relation to outstanding warrants.
Three men were also arrested in NSW during the operation, with a 27-year-old prospect from the Northern Territory was charged with possess knife in a public place, a 43-year-old member from the Northern Territory was charged with drive while suspended, and a 23-year-old associate from South Australia was charged with driving unlicensed.
They will all face a NSW court at a later date.
During the operation, police also served a firearms prohibition order (FPO), issued 28 consorting warnings, 35 NSW traffic infringements, numerous VIC traffic infringements, and five defect notices.
Officers also conducted more than 100 random breath tests, and numerous random drug tests, with 10 returning a positive result.
Due to level of enforcement, the planned ride was cancelled.
National Task Force Morpheus, a joint initiative of all Australian law enforcement agencies, was formed in September 2014 to target all OMCGs that pose a risk to our community.
Agencies involved in Operation Morpheus include the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), Australian Border Force, Australian Federal and State Police and the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
