Boston gang member sentenced to prison for murder-for-hire plot

A Boylston Street gang member was sentenced to nine years in prison Thursday in U.S. District Court for attempting to hire a hit man to kill another gang member, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.  Jaime Rivera, 21, of Boston, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release at the end of his sentence, prosecutors said in a statement.

In November, Rivera pleaded guilty to one count of using the mail or the telephone with intent for murder-for-hire to be committed and one count of cocaine distribution, the statement said. His co-defendant, Frandys Ortiz, 24, was previously sentenced to eight years in federal prison.

The prosecutors’ case against Ortiz and Rivera was built on the participation of a cooperating witness that bought firearms, heroin, and cocaine from the two men in 2014.

On July 4, 2015, Rivera and Ortiz were involved in a shoot-out with another gang member.
Shortly after the shooting, both men told the cooperating witness that they would pay him to murder the other gang member.

According to prosecutors, Rivera offered to pay $2,500 to the witness in exchange for killing the man.
“There’s bread for you... if he dies,” Rivera told the witness in a recorded meeting, cautioning him that “... if your gonna do leg shots, don’t even do it.”
