“Several recent violent encounters between Hells Angels and Mongols” cited in fatal gas station shooting
RIVERSIDE — City of Riverside police officials are continuing to investigate what they are calling a gang-related, double shooting at a gas station that left one motorcyclist dead (link is external), Sunday evening, May 21.
The shooting, that resulted in the death of 31-year-old, Orange resident, James Duty, happened at a Shell gas station at 3502 Adams Street, near the 91 Freeway, in Riverside. In a recent social media update to their ongoing investigation into the deadly shooting, Riverside police officials cited “several recent violent encounters between Hells Angels and Mongols members in Riverside and Orange Counties,” as one of the factors in the fatal incident.
Detectives believe the ongoing, decades-long feud between the two rival “outlaw motorcycle gangs – which began back in the 1970’s,” is to blame for the fatal shooting, officials wrote in a social media update.
The investigation began just before 10:30 p.m., when an attendant at the gas station called 911 to report a shooting in progress. The attendant told dispatchers an unknown person opened fire at a group of motorcyclists who were standing near their bikes and the gas pumps. When officers arrived, “they found five members of the Hells Angels outlaw motorcycle gang in the area of the Shell station fuel pumps,” officials explained in the update.
“One of these members, James Duty, was shot multiple times and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital,” said officials. “A second Hells Angels member was struck by a bullet in the helmet he was wearing but was not injured.”
Detectives from the department’s Robbery – Homicide Unit and Gang Intelligence Unit responded to the gas station and assumed the investigation. They were assisted by evidence technicians from the department’s Forensic Unit as well as the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and coroner’s officials.
During their investigation, detectives obtained surveillance footage from surrounding businesses that showed the suspect vehicle racing through a parking lot. The video shows the suspected shooter, an unknown and unidentified male, partially hanging out the passenger window of the car.
Officials described the car as a silver, four-door sedan, “believed to be a 2012 to 2014 Nissan Versa or Chevy Cruze,” with black rims.
“It appears the shooter was the front passenger of the suspect vehicle,” said officials. “He is described as a White or Hispanic male, 5’10” tall, and weighing approximately 200 pounds.”
After the shooting, the suspect car was last seen fleeing onto the west bound on ramp to the 91 freeway from Adams Street.
