Hells Angel posts $7,000 cash bail on drug-related charges

A Hells Angels member from the Eastern Shore has been granted bail on a slew of drug-related charges. Paul Francis Monahan, 61, of Ostrea Lake near Musquodoboit Harbour, was arrested Nov. 1 in conjunction with a series of police raids in Nova Scotia and Ontario that targeted the outlaw motorcycle gang.

Monahan appeared in Dartmouth provincial court Wednesday for a bail hearing. Crown attorney Mike Taylor consented to his release after he posted cash bail of $7,000. Monahan faces 15 charges of trafficking marijuana, one of possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and one of possession of proceeds of crime.

Mark David Heickert (link is external), 48, of Orillia, Ont., was also picked up by police Nov. 1. Heickert and Monahan are jointly charged with four counts of conspiracy to traffic cocaine and one of conspiracy to possess proceeds of crime.

RCMP said Monahan is a “hang-around” member of the New Brunswick Nomads Hells Angels chapter, while Heickert belongs to the Hells Angels chapter in Oshawa, Ont.

Heickert was not prepared to seek bail Wednesday so his hearing was rescheduled for next week.
After a nine-month investigation, RCMP raided homes in Ostrea Lake and Orillia and the Hells Angels clubhouse in Musquodoboit Harbour.

Officers allegedly seized two kilograms of cocaine, a sawed-off shotgun, a large quantity of cash, outlaw motorcycle gang paraphernalia, multiple cellphones and electronics from the homes, and a small quantity of hash and marijuana, unidentified pills, outlaw motorcycle gang paraphernalia, cellphones, electronics and cash from the clubhouse.

Monahan’s release conditions require him to remain in Nova Scotia and check in with a police officer by telephone every Friday. He is prohibited from having contact with Heickert, is not to associate with any members of the Hells Angels or affiliated clubs and cannot possess any firearms.

Monahan’s charges will be back in court Dec. 19.
