Just after 12.30am on Sunday 11 March 2018, a 27-year-old man – an off-duty law enforcement officer from interstate – was walking along Cronulla Mall with friends, when they were approached by a group of men.
Following a verbal altercation between the groups, the man was punched in the face, causing him to lose consciousness and fall to the ground, hitting his head.
Police and emergency services were contacted, but the other group fled the scene.
The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for head and face injuries before being taken to Sutherland Hospital for further treatment. He was later released and has since returned to full duties.
Officers from Sutherland Police Area Command attended and spoke with a group of men at a nearby licensed premises, but no one was arrested. An investigation was then launched by detectives from the Criminal Groups Squad.
Following extensive inquiries, a 27-year-old Helensburgh man was arrested on See Street, Kensington, about 9.30am on Friday 15 June 2018, and served Firearms and Weapons Prohibition Orders. A short time later, a search warrant was executed at a home unit at Helensburgh, where investigators seized a knife, cash, cannabis, steroids, and clothing.
The man, who is a member of the Hells Angels OMCG, was taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm. He was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Thursday 19 July 2018).
