Several people have been hospitalised, some with stab wounds, after a gang fight at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park near Christchurch.
Detective Sergeant Brad Grainger said two gangs were involved in the fight in Templeton, near Christchurch, just after midday on Sunday.
Some of the gang members were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from moderate to serious, with some receiving stab wounds, Grainger said.
Stuff understands the gangs involved were the Hells Angels Motorcycle Gang and The Outlaws Motorcycle Club.
Grainger said police did not tolerate such behaviour, particularly at public events.
"The actions of these criminal gangs are concerning and have made it unsafe for the general public, we would like to find out what happened and obtain evidence in relation to this offending," he said.
Police encouraged witnesses to come forward.
Grainger said anyone with video footage of the incident should contact Christchurch police by calling 03 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The Sound of Thunder motorcycle race was held at the raceway at the weekend. The organisers, the BEARS Motorcycle Club, have been approached for comment.
St John spokeswoman Neha Concisom said an ambulance was called to the incident but was later stood down.
Earlier, police incorrectly said the fight was at the Ruapuna Speedway, which is beside the Mike Pero Motorsport Park.
Ruapuna Speedway was closed on Sunday.
