CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two men admitted Friday to kidnapping a man in Mansfield and stabbing him to death in Cleveland as part of a “beef” involving motorcycle gangs.
Richard Cole, 37, of Dayton, and Anthony Day, 42, of Conneaut, each pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and kidnapping charges in the June killing of 29-year-old Richard Hamel (link is external).
Common Pleas Court Judge Ashley Kilbane sentenced Cole to life in prison with the first chance at parole after serving 25 years in prison. She set sentencing for Day for May 20, the day four other people charged in Hamel’s death are set to begin trial.
Lawyers in the case on Friday said the motive for Hamel’s death, in which he was stabbed about 30 times in the backyard of a house on Cleveland’s far West Side, remained fuzzy.
“This was a beef or fight based on some information with motorcycles and gangs that certain people might be in,” Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Brian Radigan said in court Friday. “So unfortunately that’s what led to the death of Mr. Hamel.”
Cole and Day are among seven people charged in Hamel’s stabbing. Angel Wolfe, 42, of Ashtabula, and Jacob Stone, 42, of Waterloo, New York, each face aggravated murder, kidnapping and other charges in the death. Roswitha White, 62, of Conneaut, and Stephanie Feckley, 25 (link is external), of Brooklyn are each charged with obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence.
Feckley’s mother, 48-year-old Brenda Dinickle, of Cleveland, pleaded no contest in November to obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence charges. She was found guilty and was sentenced to probation.
Wofle, Stone, White and Feckley are each set to begin trial on May 20.
Wolfe drove from Conneaut, picked up Stone and Cole and drove to Hamel’s Mansfield home on June 30, according to court records.
The three men told Wolfe to drive them and Hamel to a home on Linnet Avenue, just west of West 105th Street in the Cleveland's West Boulevard neighborhood, the records say. Day, Stone and Cole walked Hamel into the backyard, where they repeatedly stabbed him, according to court records.
The group left Hamel’s body in the backyard and Wolfe drove Day, Stone and Cole back to Day’s home in Conneaut, according to court records.
The next day, Wolfe and Day drove the other two men to a home in Kearney, Nebraska, and then drove back to Conneaut, according to court records.
Cole was arrested in Phoenix on a probation violation there and admitted to a police detective there his role in the killing, according to court records.
