Perth former soldier arrested in connection to public assassination of Rebels bikie boss

Perth detectives have arrested a man overnight in connection with the public assassination of former Rebels bikie boss Nick Martin.

Officers involved in Operation Ravello spent Monday combing through a house in Waikiki, in Perth’s south, before a man was escorted in handcuffs into a police car.

The man, who is yet to be charged, was taken to Perth amid a heavy security operation to be questioned by police.

He is a former soldier with military experience and engages in high-risk adventure sports including base jumping and rock climbing.

Nine News Perth reporter Michael Stamp said the man is also linked to a humanitarian movement called Shadows of Hope.

“I’ve spoken to a few neighbours here on the street, they say he’s been to Afghanistan, he’s been to Iraq,” he said.

“This Shadows of Hope, they’re staffed by former soldiers around the world trying to bring justice to war-torn areas.”

The breakthrough arrest comes three months after Mr Martin was shot dead by a suspected sniper in front of horrified onlookers at Perth Motorplex on December 12.

The man’s Shoalhaven Place house was swarmed by police on Monday, with officers removing evidence bags from the home and towing away cars and a boat.

Raids also took place at two other homes while forensic officers scoured bushland near the salt lakes in Warnbro.

Nearby off Safety Bay Road police were searching bushland too, Nine News Perth reported.

Mr Martin was watching the Outlaw Nitro Challenge at the Kwinana venue with his wife and stepdaughter when he was gunned down about 8.40pm.

The partner of Mr Martin’s stepdaughter, former Bandidos bikie Ricky Chapman, was hit in the arm by the bullet.

A five-year-old who was sitting on Mr Martin’s wife’s lap was also injured but did not need medical attention.

In the days after the arrest, police issued a $1 million reward for any information leading to the arrest of the shooter.

The homes of Hells Angel sergeant-in-arms, Dayne Brajkovich, and a Mongols bikie have since been targeted in suburban drive-by shootings suspected to be linked to rising tensions within Perth’s outlaw motorcycle gangs.
