Russian authorities have been trying to stamp out organized people smuggling rings along its south-west borders. The latest operation was in Russia’s Bryansk region, 250 miles from Moscow and the same distance to Chernobyl in the other direction. Part of that police operation was secretly tracking suspected people smugglers from high above, with a military drone, as they moved foreign nationals into Russia across the border from Belarus.
It is remarkably similar to a probe in November, targeting another smuggling operation 1,000 miles east, near Russia’s border with Kazakhstan, the country made famous by Borat, the mockumentary by Sacha Baron Cohen.
